ABSTRACT

The number of foreign students studying Chinese medicine in China has always been the first in the rank of natural sciences foreign students studying in China. They are mostly from developing countries, keen on Chinese traditional culture, and prefer practical specialties such as acupuncture. The general education of overseas students majoring in traditional Chinese medicine can help them learn professional knowledge and integrate into Chinese society more rapidly, which promotes the global spread of Chinese culture. In the nearly 20 years of general education for foreign students, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has made clear the teaching ideas and guidelines, strengthened the construction of teachers, attached importance to the feedback of students, adjusted the curriculum with the times, encouraged the experience complementary among brother colleges, and further promoted international exchanges. Especially, the courses such as the History of Chinese Medicine, have achieved good teaching results. To actively carry out general education for foreign students in Chinese medicine colleges and Confucius Institutes of Traditional Chinese Medicine around the world is not only conducive to the cultivation of talents of traditional Chinese medicine in the world, but also an effective way to inherit and develop traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT

To improve the phenomenon of low participation and lack of innovation in education mode in general medical education elective courses, we have applied "creating significant learning experiences" to the design and implementation of medical general education curriculum, starting from six dimensions of learning including basic knowledge, application, synthesis, humanistic dimension, humanistic care, and learning to learn, setting learning goals, developing assessment tools and finally choosing teaching methods, thus forming a closed-loop teaching. And through the curriculum reform, collection of feedback and collation of data, the teaching activities designed according to this method fully meet and serve the teaching purposes, and assessment methods become more diverse and the content is more comprehensive, which reflects the multi-dimensional evaluation of the needs of general education.

ABSTRACT

As an emerging branch of biology, Synthetic Biology has seen rapid development with great potential in theoretical research and application. With a lot of brand-new concepts and research methods, it brings challenges to university teachers, and little experience is available in China on the teaching of Synthetic Biology. In this study, we discussed the general education-based development and application of the course on Synthetic Biology (a discipline in "liberal arts" in Zhejiang University) from the background, design, implementation, outcome, and problems of the course, hoping to provide a reference for the optimization of the course and the design of similar courses in other universities in China.

Health economics is an important part of general education for medical students, but the traditional,professional-education-oriented health economics courses do not adapt to the requirements of medical students' general education, which makes it necessary to reconstruct the course based on the concept of general education.Firstly, the course target should be reestablished with the full implementation of general education concept.Secondly, the teaching contents should be comprehensively optimized with a substantial streamlining of traditional content system.Thirdly, the teaching methods should be improved in order to meet the demands of the target. Finally, according to the teaching practice,it is suggested that more effort should be put on the teaching ability of teachers, the mining of new methods and cases, and the construction of high quality teaching materials.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Today, the social requirement of medicine emphasizes the importance of medical professionalism. This forces medical educators to introduce new contents and methods into the curriculum. This study aims to offer ideas for developing the curriculum through clarifying priorities on the basic qualities of medical professionalism and evaluating the current curriculums in medical schools in South Korea. METHODS: In April 2005, 46 respondents majoring in basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, and medical humanities/social sciences completed a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 3 categories related to: 1) the basic qualities of medical professionalism/general education courses, 2) the process of developing the qualities of humanities and social sciences in medical education, and 3) the appropriate allocation of credits for each subject to premedical and medical courses. The analysis consisted of frequency, chi-square, and multiple responses using Korean Ed, SPSS 14.0 for Windows. RESULTS: The most important basic quality is basic medical knowledge. The credits for the general education are sufficient but it's contribution is lacking (44.44%). The most lacking element in the general education courses is socio-cultural comprehension (45.65%). The knowledge of humanities and social sciences is very important in developing the basic qualities (56.52%). The important learning experiences related to these is the introspection into human beings (32.16%). Credits for medical humanities classes in premedical and medical course are noticeably insufficient (45.65, 54.35%, respectively). The appropriate program of informal curriculum for fostering the qualities is meeting with various medical specialists (44.44%, 47.83%, respectively). There is almost no difference among the major groups under (p<.05.) CONCLUSION: To assist medical students to be equipped with the basic qualities of medical professionalism, the realm of medical humanities should be made mandatory; and the general education courses need to be reformed, especially in the premedical curriculum. In particular, continuous cooperation between faculties in medicine, liberal arts, and/or social sciences need to exist with the conglomeration of these into fewer medical humanities majors in Korea.

ABSTRACT

The innovation of the University Chartering Standards Law in 1991 triggered changes in general education in almost all medical schools in Japan. These changes include: 1) frequent abolition of the department of general education; 2) an expansion in the offerings of specialty subject; and 3) increase in early exposure programs. The Model of general education has, in general, changed from the liberal arts model to the one that emphasizes the development of physicians. One remaining problem is that, although the system of general education has changed, the traditional pedagogy has generally persisted. These are at least two possible forms that general education can take in the future. The first one comes from the U.S., in which students enter medical schools after finishing their general college education. The other one stems from an European model in which high school provide students with part of their general education, and medical schools provide them with intensive basic and humanity education that is necessary for physicians. Medical schools in Japan now face three major challenges for the future: 1) seeking how to teach ways of thinking other than medical one; 2) establishing an education system corresponding with recent changes in young people; 3) establishing divisions which comprehensively organize and supervise general education.

ABSTRACT

It is a great social demand on the medical education system to produce high quality physicians well -prepared for the coming aged society. Besides the inborn emphasis on the technical competence in medical training, the skills to improve the quality of life of patients is currently getting more and more important. In this aspect, human relationship and amenity dimensions need to be more emphasized in the medical education process.
Based upon the observation that lecture-based classes still prevail in the curricula of Japanese medical schools, I dare say that there are eventually no revolutionary strategies initiated for effective learning in the medical education system in Japan. In connection to the strategy development, it is necessary to adopt third-party evaluation of the education system as well as the evaluation by educators themselves.
To sum up, I strongly emphasize the importance of strategic programming of primary care education which includes experience-based training of effective communication skills and of whole-person approach to patients.
